Who would have guess I would turn out to be a female body builder at my age. I worked out all my life but it was more for conditioning and strength. I use to paddle outrigger canoes and also competed in California and Hawaii.
When I moved to Utah in 2004......there were no sports available that I would be interested in. They didn't have outrigger canoe clubs because they didn't have and ocean......all they had was the Great Salt Lake. I did continue to go to the gym....but that changed because they discontinued the gym.
My health started to take a toll on me. I was diagnosed with COPD and I had Rheumatoid Arthritis.
In June 2009 I met Gary. When he was younger he competed in body building for Utah. He also played hockey, and worked out.
I started working out with him but he would do his routine and I would do mine. I was just happy to go back to the gym.
Not until 2010 we decided to step up our work out routine. We went to our 1st competition contest and I was amazed to see fitness and bikini, but not women body builders. That's when I knew I wanted to be a body builder. I read about women body builders and what they had to endure to get ready for competition.
My eyes were open when I read women stacking the weights on to get the definition they needed to win. I realized I needed to step up my work by learning to endure as much weights as I could and to challenge myself each step of the way.
As and e x-bodybuilder, who better to train me then Gary. We trained together and set goals so we could challenge our potential. Gary put away his hockey skates and went back to body building.
We've been training together for 5 years and though we don't workout together during the week days like we use to, we still train hard every day and harder when we workout together on weekends.
In 2013 I was ready for my 1st competition but unfortunately plans had to be changed due to a personal commitment.
I discontinued working out in November 2013, but went back to the gym April 2014.
I have committed myself to get back into body building.....and with the help of my husband Gary I have learned what I need to get back to where I was in 2013.
I'll get to where I want to be and more.......I have the aggressiveness and the endurance to challenge myself.
My COPD and Rheumatoid Arthritis is still part of my life.....but I'm not too concerned about this because I have learned to work my way out of any type of pain or respiratory problems through my body building.
Why do I body build? The adrenalin.....the progress.....the challenge.....And to know I can do it!
I'm 65 years old.....I plan on going the distance until I can't do it anymore.
Thanks to my husband who supports and believes that I can do it.....Will I ever stop body building? NO......it's in me to push and challenge myself. Am I still planning on competing? You Bet.....
Will I succeed? Watch me....
